Test report

At what requirements must a sportscar meet? He must be quick  of course. A flashy acceleration is important, and despite all the
speed limits - also a high topspeed. Such as the Porsche Boxster.

The design of the Porsche Boxster looked back mainly to the Spyder 550, a sports racecar from the fifties. Its name refers directly to the kind of power we find in the mid engine placing. That is a - six cylinder boxer engine. With of course rear wheel drive. A high compression 11,0:1 he squeezes from the 2480 cc a not mis understanded power of 150 KW/204 hp and a torque of 245 Nm.

Modern as it is, has the boxer engine adjustable inlet camshafts. These create souples and give the engine a torque of 200Nm just startting at 1750rpm. This amount of torque is still present at 6400rpm.

The interior is clearly aimed to join the Porsche tradition. You can see it in the placement of the ignition, left of the wheel. You also see it in the way the instruments are grouped. The prominent revcounter in the middle, left from the revcounter the speedometer.

The Boxster is prohibited with thin seats, that are clearly sportly formed with a good side support. They also offer the usual adjustments. The seating height can be electrical adjust as also the backseating.

The steeringwheel is adjustable in lenght. After turning the ignitionkey there is something of a disappointment. From behind there is not immediately spectacular sound. Modern times has there demands on the noise production.

The clutch is heavy and for shifting you need a ferm hand. The car has power steering, but needs  some muscle power from your arms.  The Boxster driver needs to work in this car. But I think he would not mind. The Porsche perform a perfect road handling evan at high speed corners.

His midships engine gives him a very nice weight distribution, the flat boxer engine takes care of a lower point of center gravity. This provides a long beautifully neutral cornering behavior. But beware, if you lose control in a car with a midship engine, there is a great driver needed to get it back under control. Traction control is there for protecting so the wheels do not go spinning , cost some extra. But protect the driver against losing control.

Acceleration from 0-100 for example, Traction control is then very un useful. There must be a driver with a determined but controlled right feet and rapid means of switching to be useful, but the Boxster is the promise of its manufacturer, and reaches in about seven seconds the 100 km limit.

As a bonus he treat his driver from 5000 to 5500 rpm on an exciting turbine sound. Just to hear that, you always want to hit the trothle from the Boxster. A couple of sprints (80-120) then. Covered in 'four' and 'five', by 8.9 and 13.4 seconds, this is a little bit poor. But wait, you can return to 'third gear". And then suddenly the Porsche rockets in 5.8 s from 80 to 120.

Great sound.
A little engine- and driving noise, that is something a Porsche driver is not afraid for. And it will not disturb him -that with the hood closed - the noise level in the interior at 100km constant has 73.5 dB from 120km to 74.5,  and rising after that.

Also he don't mind that the hard suspension, which provides a direct contact with the road. Leaves him little comfort, when the paving is very bad. A Porsche is a real sportscar. And sport is a little refrain.

But that does not abandon the rigidity of the Boxster-coach, because there is nothing wrong with that.
The Boxster does not even have a glovebox - at that place is the second air bag - and for a center console you have to pay extra. The for a sportscar, not too small luggage room, partly front and partly at the rear, remains as much if the hood is open or closed.

The softtop wil open and closes electricley in just 12 sec. With its purchase price of Hfl 130.000 is the Porsche Boxster firmley priced. Given the equipment. But yes, for a car riding like the Boxster, that can not be a problem...
